Why are infrared bulbs red or clear in color?

Clear works fine, but I think they use red for visual effect, since when people see red bulbs they know they are infrared. Clear bulbs, you may have to read the box or the imprint on the top to know it is infrared. Clear bulbs could easily be just spotlights so by being red in color people associate it easier with infrared.

Red is not a block to infrared wavelengths, so the infrared passes thru unimpeded. Clear of course, lets all colors come thru too. Clear is probably cheaper for a manufacturer to make but red is more recognizable
