Do MPs' need a guide to clearing up broken light bulbs?

MPs have been issued with a 10-point guide on what to do if they find a broken light bulb in Parliament.

An MP wanted to know ';what guidance has been issued on procedures for cleaning up and disposing of environmentally-friendly light bulbs which have been broken';.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jht鈥?/a>Do MPs' need a guide to clearing up broken light bulbs?
hi, maybe they should get a guide on how to transfer confidential details safelyDo MPs' need a guide to clearing up broken light bulbs?
Energy saving lampbulbs contain mercury and bismuth and have various other unpleasant substances in the circuit board. They are certainly not environmentally friendly.
I honestly do not know what to say to this. I wish they had a guide on how to listen to their constituents, how to vote in the commons for things they beleive in and not be bullied into things they don't. I wish they had a guide on how to stop making this country into a sess pit for all and sundry,I wish they had a guide on how to get rid of prime ministers that are crap. There are loads of thing I wish they had a guide for. Just shows how stupid they are and they are running the country and wasting tax payers money.Give me strength, do I need a guide to get this.

Shouldn't the manufacturers of flourescent screw-in light bulbs put a clear coating in case of breakage?

As a replacement for incandescent bulbs with a filament, I do see the logic in using less electricity/ replacing less often/ saving some money....

....but the steps required to clean up after breaking a flourescent bulb due to the mercury release seems a real ordeal- %26amp; who goes the full nine yards as mentioned in this article:

http://ellsworthmaine.com/site/index.php鈥?/a>Shouldn't the manufacturers of flourescent screw-in light bulbs put a clear coating in case of breakage?
I think that has been blown way out of proportion. The mercury in those bulbs is less than a standard fluorescent tube we have been using in our offices and garages for many years.

Check out:

People should be more careful. I hate how everything has to be made for the safety of the complete moron in mind. My favorite hiking trail was recently closed because some fool decided it would be fun to slide down an embankment. The trail is now deemed ';unsafe'; because of his foolish actions.
I pretty much agree with ablex...

but, i do not think it would hurt to put a plastic coating and it would noy be expensive at all.....

to add to what ablex said.....

The amount of mercury in those bulbs is more than offset by decreasing the amount of mercury emmissions from coal fired power plants by needin less power.

But then again, every little bit helps. So lets coat them too!
She went threw 2 much trouble and spent too much money she could have cleaned this up her self with a mask that you get at a doctors office and a broom and dust pan. The vacuum would have just put it in the air but safe to use after words. She should have called a company that recycles Lamps. Yes it need to be contained after clean up but it is easy to do that it would have cost her 100 dollars in the end.
Plastic will yellow when exposed to warm temperatures. This causes these bulbs to be worthless even sooner.

It's bad enough that these bulbs become dim after just 3 or 4 months already. I have incandescent bulbs that are 15 years old.

Which is better or brighter: clear or frost electric bulbs?

Frost i believe. Clear always leaves a musky damp look to me that's semi lighted.Which is better or brighter: clear or frost electric bulbs?
if clear it will almost be the same as in home , if frost it will be a like to some of the restaurantWhich is better or brighter: clear or frost electric bulbs?
I like the frost one, I think they're nicer
It would really depend on what you would need to use it for, if you want to dim a particular location in your house for a moody and subtle effect then the best way to go is the frosted electric bulb, they provide just enough light to highlight what is directly beneath them. Now if your going for luminicity or need a general all around light for the room or house then you would be better of using the clear one, but personally speaking if this was the case i would rather go for a flourescent lamp since it requires less electricity thereby saving you on your electric bills soon after
frost,i guess.
clear if you want to be able to see

frost for a ';mood'; like in some resaurants
frost is much better

Why are infrared bulbs red or clear in color?

Clear works fine, but I think they use red for visual effect, since when people see red bulbs they know they are infrared. Clear bulbs, you may have to read the box or the imprint on the top to know it is infrared. Clear bulbs could easily be just spotlights so by being red in color people associate it easier with infrared.

Red is not a block to infrared wavelengths, so the infrared passes thru unimpeded. Clear of course, lets all colors come thru too. Clear is probably cheaper for a manufacturer to make but red is more recognizable

I wish you luck.

I have found it is often cheaper to trow a set of lights away and buy a new set than try to get a replacement lamp, that is assuming the blown lamp will come out of its holder leaving the holder still intact. Yes I know its wasteful, but if the lights are cheap and a new lamp + postage is 1/3 the cost of the whole set whats the point, 4 lamps gone, = new set all singing all dancing lights

    Clear Glass Christmas Ornament Bulbs?

I need about 30 clear GLASS ornament bulbs for a sculpture, preferably over 3 inches in diameter. Im looking to spend under $50. If anyone knows where i can buy these (store or online) in bulk that would be great. i didnt think it would be this hard to find these! thanks!Clear Glass Christmas Ornament Bulbs?
I don't know if you have a Pat Catan's craft store where you live, but I know they carry the ornaments you described. I think the company Darice manufactures them, so you might be able to find them online. Other craft stores like Michaels may have those ornaments too. If not try looking on ebay or craigs list.

What is the difference with soft white & clear light bulbs? what about blue ones?

The soft white will diffuse the light more, hence ';soft'; white. The blue ones are designed to filter out unwanted portions of the spectrum, giving you a more pure light.

Soft White and Reveal (the blue ones) look very similar, but I personally prefer the Reveal because it makes things in the room look more rich and natural. (Perhaps it helps correct the CRI - Color Rendering Index) meaning, it makes the things in your surroundings (like paint or furniture for example) look more like they're intended, rather than having a strange wavelength, like fluorescent lights, ';modify'; the original colors.

Clear light bulbs will give off a more harsh, and focused light compared to these two. What is the difference with soft white %26amp; clear light bulbs? what about blue ones?
Just the color of the glass. Soft white has glass with a white coating on it to diffuse the light, clear bulbs are made of plain clear glass.

Soft white light bulbs or clear light bulbs?

which ones are better and do they really make any difference?Soft white light bulbs or clear light bulbs?
Soft white is a better reading light and also doesn't show a hot spot from a covered light fixture or shade. clear light bulbs give off a brighter lightSoft white light bulbs or clear light bulbs?
Soft white is easier on the eyes but if you need brighter light use the clear.
Soft white are soft just like they say. Clear are very bright.

I prefer clear, so that is what is on my tree. At the bar/club, where I am the decorating committee, we have multi-colored (only because I went over budget on other decorations leaving no money for new tree lights).Lighting the Christmas tree? Will it be all clear bulbs or multicolor this year?
I like multi-coloredLighting the Christmas tree? Will it be all clear bulbs or multicolor this year?
I love the multi-colored bulbs and that is what is on my prelit tree, to me multi-colored bulbs are so much more festive.
Multicolored adds dimension and cheer. However if you want a specific effect or want the ornaments to stand more, the white ones are better. Example: A monocromatic ornaments tree, or a theme tree... An exeption would be a multicolor theme.
I know this may be going overboard, but it is stunning and makes us all happy: we wrapped the trunk of the tree (all the way up) with white lights, and then wrapped it as usual with multi. It really glows, but has the color for the kids, too. I won't bother trying to remove the white, though... ouch!
kids like multicolor....clear are better looking.....your choice.
I prefer multi-coloured, and yes, I'm an adult! I just think they're more festive and I tend to find the white ones kinda blah!
i have multicolored. they are prettier i think.
I love colored lights, I always have and I always will, they are just more fun...

Yes the lens has to be red and properly standardised for road legal useDoes the rear fog lamp lense have to be red or can it be clear with a red bulb?
    Whats the point?

Soon as you start 'converting ' you make it illegal re Police/Insurance because its a modification you will have forgotten to inform them about.

When you in a few years from now, have your kids wiped out cos the ******** in front was not displaying proper lights, you might be of a different opinion.

    FFS.
If you have a 21w red bulb in a clear lamp fitted in the centre or o/s of vehicle and have a warning lamp to show that it's working, should be ok..
The light needs to be red, not the lens.
It would have to be a red lens.
I'm pretty sure you need the lens to pass the MOT.
red lens and the fog bulb is brighter than the rear lamp bulbs

Here's a more permanent lens repair kit that uses plastic rather than tape and is approved by the Department of Transportation (DOT).

http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Produ鈥?/a>Will a Fixit Ticket be cleared if I replace brake light bulb but the taillight assembly is taped over cracks?
Well as long as the hole is covered with the proper tape color,I would say it would be fine.As long as the light works and all visible holes are covered then you'll be fine.If you have any problems, call the police station and ask a officer.Good look.
it should be ok with the police if it,s covered right and not just throw the tape on and the light is working.

Many ways to do it - you can buy a spray 'misting coat' or the harder version 'frosting coat' - available from Focus DIY stores - another method - although it carries some risk of failure is to use a fine wire wool over the entire surface - this puts fine scratches onto the surface of the acrylic - but be warned - this is not for the novice - it takes practice - another option is to buy a sheet of plastic opaque film - again from a DIY store - it is self adhesive and you lay it flat and 'roll' the lamp cover over the sticky side and trim the excess off - this only really works on conventional trumpet shaped covers

  • Do clear light bulbs give off more heat than soft light bulbs?

I'm using light bulbs for light as well as a heat source. Thanks!Do clear light bulbs give off more heat than soft light bulbs?
The actual amount of heat given off by these bulbs would be the same, but the way they distribute it would be different.

The clear bulb would radiate more heat in the form of radiant heat - infrared radiation - which goes off in all directions, the frosted glass of the soft bulbs would absorb most of this heat, and then would give off that heat from right at the surface of the frosted glass. That heat would then transfer to the surrounding air, and travel upwards in a fairly narrow column as a convection current.

Of course, you also get more light from a clear bulb, too, even if it is a bit ';harsher';.

So if you wanted to spread the heat as much as possible, use a clear bulb.Do clear light bulbs give off more heat than soft light bulbs?
You are confusing the glass with the filament. The heat given out by an incandescent filament is a function of temperature only, has nothing to do with the glass bulb.

Look at the color temperature of the 2 bulbs and read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_body

You can figure out the answer yourself.

Is it possible to buy energy saving bulbs in clear glass somewhere?

Like what Ellen DeGeneres said ';clear'; should be called ';Window';! :)If Clear is NOT a color then what do You consider the color of a see through lighter or light bulb?
Depends. If the see through lighter is tinted with a color then you call it the color of the tint. Where can i compare luminance (according to wattage) of CFLs and standard (clear) bulbs?

I now know that CFLs consume much less power than bulbs and I have signed a petition to ';BAN THE BULB';. I also have decided to remove all bulbs from my house and replace them with CFLs.. CFLs with lesser wattage than bulbs can give the same amount of luminance; now is there any website where i can compare the luminance of CFLs and bulbs so that i can buy CFLs with the correct luminance?Where can i compare luminance (according to wattage) of CFLs and standard (clear) bulbs?
The lumens of every lamp should be on the box, if you have any specific questions try either the GE or Sylvania website.

One thought for you though, every CFL contains mercury and therefore needs to be disposed of properly, not just tossed into the rubbish bin so they might end up not being so good for the environment after all and they as of today still cannot be dimmed properly.Where can i compare luminance (according to wattage) of CFLs and standard (clear) bulbs?
    Here's some technical data:

    http://www1.eere.energy.gov/femp/procure鈥?/a>

Note that the package will say what the equivalent incandescent is.

One thing to be aware of is that soft white bulbs more closely resemble incandescent lighting, while cool white or daylight types give a bluer light, more light conventional fluorescents.

Also know that compact fluorescents reduce mercury pollution.

Fossil fuels contain mercury. Using incandescent bulbs causes more mercury to be emitted from power plants. More than the tiny amount (0.005 grams or less) that is in a CFL.

It's better if you dispose of old CFLs properly so that even the tiny amount of mercury is not released. But, no matter how they're disposed of, CFLs reduce mercury pollution.

    http://www.cityofberkeley.info/sustainab鈥?/a>

    http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/cfl鈥?/a>
You can determine this at the store, on the side of the packaging. For example, I have a 42w cfl that is equivalent to a 150w incandescent bulb.
    I don't know.

Which is brighter: a light bulb with a white coating or one that is clear?

Please, answer my moon question also. I think a mirrored moon would be brighter, even though the light beam would be smaller. Thank you for your help. Even if I don't agree :-)Which is brighter: a light bulb with a white coating or one that is clear?
The clear bulb is brighter and more efficient, but only by a small amount.

The clear bulb appears brighter because all of the light is seen concentrated at the filament. The purpose of frosting is to make the light appear less bright when viewed directly. The frosting diffuses the light, spreading it out over a larger surface, thereby lowering the intensity (or brightness).

The frosting also absorbs a small amount of light (turning it into heat).

Here is a page showing testing that was done in 1926 during the development of a frosting process. The ';lumens'; column shows that clear bulb emits the most light. The column ';Max Brightness, Candles / per sq. cm.'; shows that the clear bulb appears about 40 times brighter than a frosted bulb when viewed directly. The column ';Absorption of Light Percent'; shows the percentage of emitted light that is lost when transmitted through the frosting.

    http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/ie50鈥?/a>

By the way, light-bulb manufacturers refer to their product as a ';lamp';, not as a ';light bulb';. When researching manufacturer's data, ';lamp'; will often yield better results than ';bulb';. But everyone expects ';light bulb'; for the screw-in jokes.

Regarding the mirrored moon, I don't understand your question. Sorry.

Get a humidifier and some baby saline drops. Yes, it is safe to use the bulb syringe to unblock his nose. I used it for my son whenever he needed it. The worst that can happen from using it too much is his nose may bleed a little, if that happens just try not to do as often. And I know what you mean about the mucus getting into his lungs. I was so worried about my son, he had very bad upper respiratory infections when he was a little baby. And do not listen to the girl below me, she is speaking non-sense. Water from where? His sweat? It is okay to use a bulb syringe as long as you don't stick it too far up his nose. I've heard of babies getting bloody noses and having problems because it can really cause some damage. If you stick it too far up there, who knows? You might suction out his brain or something. Is he sweaty or clammy? Maybe he has a fever and you should take him to the hospital.
just use it to suck the snot out, if that's the problem. Don't put water in your babys nose. If his nose is dry and that's the problem put a smidge of saline up there. Some babies are just huffy puffy through their noses. If your still not satisfied call your doctor.

Unfortunately for the little ones, the bulb is the best, though they HATE it. That does get better...my toddler now brings the bulb to me when she's congested and wants to get the congestion out of her nose.

One good thing you can do though, is to bring the bouncy seat or something (with baby) into the bathroom, shut the door and take a nice, hot shower. The steam generated from the shower will help clear up the little sinuses. (please don't take baby IN to the shower though!)

Also, I used the kids version of vicks vapor rub on my little girl, and that seemed to help. Unfortunately, you can't ask them if they feel better.
Buy a humidifier/vaporizer for his room.

What light bulb should I buy if I want a powerful and very clear (white) light?

Fluorescents are the worst lights of all. You do not want them. For one they are the worst lights in homes as they are harsh and unflattering. But they also have toxic mercury in them. And they make everything and everyone look yellow. Not a flattering color. The best and most like sunlight are halogens and they all have dimmers which saves energy. The next best choice are the Reveal series incandescents. They again are most like natural light and you can add dimmers to cut down on light when you don't need it bright and create ambience. There is nothing toxic about either of these choices. Most people just don't understand the use of dimmers and how they cut down on energy and increase the life of light bulbs. Please don't add to our toxic waste by choosing fluorescents. What light bulb should I buy if I want a powerful and very clear (white) light?
Go green! get a CFL light bulb. Best bet is to go with LED bulbs as they contain no mercury, last longer. However LEDs may be less powerful, and are expensive, $60 for one.

note: i just found this website offering LED bulbs for $20

How do get a light bulb out of a socket if the clear part bulb broke?

the bulb is in a sewing machine so i need something tinyHow do get a light bulb out of a socket if the clear part bulb broke?
    1. Grab a pair of needle nose pliers. Hold the lamp between your knees so you have both hands free. Then, put the pliers into the broken off base and open them up. Using continuous pressure on the pliers, twist the bulb out of the socket.

    2. Another way to get a broken bulb out is to cut a potato in half and push the raw end into the broken glass and twist. It will remove the bulb and keep your hands safe from cuts!

    3. Or try a tennis ball. Press it over the broken base and twist, just be careful not to cut yourself when you remove it the rest of the way.

    4. Grab some petroleum jelly and coat the base of the bulb before you put it in your lamp. This will keep your bulb from getting stuck in the first place. How do get a light bulb out of a socket if the clear part bulb broke?
I don't know if I would be sticking a pair of metal pliers into a busted light socket. You might want to go with the potato theory.

POTATOE!!!!...It REALLY works!!!!I didn't even have to cut mine in half...it would be dangerous to use pliers!

Just the potatoe. It's all you really need. That and of course make sure all power supply is disconnected whenever you are working with an electrical outlet.

Dan Quale would prefer the potatoe...but I use a potato. It's safe and easy, just make sure the switch is off.

next time, you might want to try turning off the fuse for that room if you plan to use the pliers again.. but a potatoe is the safest.. ;)

I was shown that by breaking the remainder of the old bulb's guts off,

I do with another lightbulb, and then screw that new bulb into the old socket. It should tighten. n Then, if you're lucky it all unscrews like a single bulb.. It's cool cause the bulb is an insulator.

sOME LIGHT BULBS CARRY A 110 VOLT ELECTRIC CURRENT IN THEM. SO IF ONE ASSUMES THAT SOME OF THESE WAYS ARE SAFE. TELL THEM TO UNPLUG IT FIRST

i would be sure it was unplugged first, then i use tweezers myself when that happpens. the dollar store lightbulbs do that.....

Safety first, I know this an old answer, but ';unplug'; the device, whatever it is,in this case a sewing machine. When you get a shock your muscles pull and close your hand tighter on the pliers, they also paralyze you, you get pumped full of electrons until the fuse or breaker blows or trips.

oh god, stop by your local lowes and buy a whole new light fixture. this way you have more than one reason to spend some $$

I use the pliers all the time! Just make sure of either three things.

1)The switch to the fixture is off.

    or

    2)It is unplugged.

    or

    3)The breaker is shut off.

Good advice, but you really should start with unplugging the sewing machine.

a potato will get the job done just turn the switch off to the fixture to kill the electricity. and put potato around the light bulb and turn it a couple times the broken bulb should come out.

Step one: TURN OFF THE POWER!!!!! How many of you idiots thought of that? Not many!

yea dumm dumm, first you should turn off power. then if you cant figure out how to remove the broken bulb you should just end yourself immediately

What's the best idea is to take a carrot (not the babie one's) the big one's and cut the fat part off so that you have a flat end. Take the flat end and stick it into the broken part of the bulb you then start unscrewing.

you could take like kitchen tongs or something like that then tape the ends of the tongs to the bulb and hold the end and gently, unscrew.

    hope it helps

This will happen everytime with the cheap (99c) Mexican bulbs. But I was able to unscrew it with a paper towel.

Okay, about the potato thing: Spuds are full of water, so pulling the cord or turning off the breaker is really important.

I faced this last month and, when the metal shell of the bulb base is in tight, all that happens is that the metal edge make a round depression in the spud. Try the pliers.

Second entry: 300 character limit is very restricting dealing with potentially fatal advice!

Rubber insulated plier handles are a must. Opening small pliers against the side the the metal shell sometimes works. Or grasp the lip of the shell and unscrew it. Coat next shell with a little Vasoline

MAKE SURE THE MACHINE IS UNPLUGGED!

    1. Try a small pair of pliers and grap the filament.

    2. If that doesn't work, take a slice of potato, jam it into the bulb, and try to twist it out.
cut a potato in half and use the meat half to twist like a wrench.
    SIMPLE. TURN OFF LIGHT SWITCH

    CUT A POTATO IN HALF

PLACE CUT END OF POTATO ON PART OF BULB(BASE) THAT IS LEFT

    PUSH AND TURN

    WORKS EVERYTIME
Unplug the appliance. Take a small potato and jam it in the socket, twist and the bulb's base should come out.
it sounds silly but cut an apple in half and use the apple( place over and turn) to get the broken part out. I saw it on DIY and i had to do it myself, it worked.Best of luck!
Turn off the machine. Unplug it. Cut a piece of potato small enough to fit in the space where the bulb is/was. push the potato into the part of the bulb that is left and unscrew it.
Okay, this is a serious answer. Use a potato. It works. I work in a restaurant and this is how we do it. Just stick the potato into the socket, apply just a little bit of pressure and start turning!
like he said needle nose pliers ----- and - oh yeah

MAKE SURE THE SWITCH IS OFF.
Absolutely have it unplugged first! You need to apply something 'spongy' to grab the loose filaments, something 'sticky' to hold on to the base of the bulb tight enough to be able to turn it, and something dry so you don't get electrocuted! Try something disposable, like silly putty, gum, even wadded up bread... I have even heard of potatoes being used, but those are large and wet. You could try new potatoes!
Cut a potato in half then jam it into the light. Make sure the power is off first.
first of all,,make sure the item is un-plugged,,no power!,,several good ways,,an eraser(the type that goes on the end of a pencil),,a peeled potato,,needle nose pliers
No matter how tiny the bulb... a potato cut in half or even a small piece of a potato will work. Just jam it on the bulb and turn. Best wishes
The potato thing works just make sure to unplug the machine.
    tiny piece of raw potato
    Best thing I've used was a candle...Rob
taffy candy, needle nose pliers or a potatoe slice
Flip the circuit breaker turning off the electric to that room. Test to make sure the power is off inside the socket. Use needle nose pliers with rubber handles and try and turn the remaining part. If that doesn't work use the needle nose to rip out the remaining part piece by piece.
Turn off the power and then insert a piece of a potato. The potato will conform to the parts of the bulb that are left so you might then be able to unscrew it easily.
TURN THE POWER OFF AND USE A PAIR OF NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS
I was going to say to put a potato in it, that works, but I guess it may be too big to fit in there.
Turn of the current to that room first! Use pliers next.
needle nose pliers......try to grab the aluminum part that screws in to it and turn it that way.. good luck!!
    eraser end of a pencil
turn off the power. screw in another light bulb a little bit and unscrew it. maybe the broken thread comes out with it, too. If not, use pliers to grab the broken thread and twist out.

Is this Clear Light Bulb it is a heat light it is 250 watts?

is it good for my iguanas basking spotIs this Clear Light Bulb it is a heat light it is 250 watts?
For a HEAT light, yes it's fine as long as you use a themometer to make sure the basking spot is not too hot. As far as UVB goes that'll require a different bulb but then again there are new bulbs that do emit both.Is this Clear Light Bulb it is a heat light it is 250 watts?
ok well if it is just a 250 watt light bulb from the shops then no because lizards need uv ray lighting which is the light from the sun. you can buy special uv light bulbs from reptile shop but they are quite pricey.

uv ray is essencil for lizards

Cat with a runny nose? Can I use a baby bulb to clear it?

She's already been to the vet and is on antibiotics, but her nose is still fairly congested. We have - under the vet's care - been giving her nose drops every other day, but I'm a little worried - now she has bloody noses sometimes. The vet said it's expected. I wondered if using one of those baby bulbs would be good to help clear her nose?

    Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help!!Cat with a runny nose? Can I use a baby bulb to clear it?
yes, you can we do that at the shelter I work atCat with a runny nose? Can I use a baby bulb to clear it?
I'm so glad you've already taken your cat to the vet. So many people who post here want us to diagnose their cat and vet be damned.

It you can get your cat to sit still for it, you should be able to use one of those baby bulbs to clear her nose. You might try wraping her in a towel before giving it a go.

    Good luck.
