How do get a light bulb out of a socket if the clear part bulb broke?

the bulb is in a sewing machine so i need something tinyHow do get a light bulb out of a socket if the clear part bulb broke?
1. Grab a pair of needle nose pliers. Hold the lamp between your knees so you have both hands free. Then, put the pliers into the broken off base and open them up. Using continuous pressure on the pliers, twist the bulb out of the socket.

2. Another way to get a broken bulb out is to cut a potato in half and push the raw end into the broken glass and twist. It will remove the bulb and keep your hands safe from cuts!

3. Or try a tennis ball. Press it over the broken base and twist, just be careful not to cut yourself when you remove it the rest of the way.

4. Grab some petroleum jelly and coat the base of the bulb before you put it in your lamp. This will keep your bulb from getting stuck in the first place. How do get a light bulb out of a socket if the clear part bulb broke?
I don't know if I would be sticking a pair of metal pliers into a busted light socket. You might want to go with the potato theory.

POTATOE!!!!...It REALLY works!!!!I didn't even have to cut mine in half...it would be dangerous to use pliers!

Just the potatoe. It's all you really need. That and of course make sure all power supply is disconnected whenever you are working with an electrical outlet.

Dan Quale would prefer the potatoe...but I use a potato. It's safe and easy, just make sure the switch is off.

next time, you might want to try turning off the fuse for that room if you plan to use the pliers again.. but a potatoe is the safest.. ;)

I was shown that by breaking the remainder of the old bulb's guts off,

I do with another lightbulb, and then screw that new bulb into the old socket. It should tighten. n Then, if you're lucky it all unscrews like a single bulb.. It's cool cause the bulb is an insulator.

sOME LIGHT BULBS CARRY A 110 VOLT ELECTRIC CURRENT IN THEM. SO IF ONE ASSUMES THAT SOME OF THESE WAYS ARE SAFE. TELL THEM TO UNPLUG IT FIRST

a ******* potato people...why does every1 make it soo damn hard

Carrot.

i would be sure it was unplugged first, then i use tweezers myself when that happpens. the dollar store lightbulbs do that.....

Safety first, I know this an old answer, but ';unplug'; the device, whatever it is,in this case a sewing machine. When you get a shock your muscles pull and close your hand tighter on the pliers, they also paralyze you, you get pumped full of electrons until the fuse or breaker blows or trips.

oh god, stop by your local lowes and buy a whole new light fixture. this way you have more than one reason to spend some $$

I use the pliers all the time! Just make sure of either three things.

1)The switch to the fixture is off.

or

2)It is unplugged.

or

3)The breaker is shut off.

Good advice, but you really should start with unplugging the sewing machine.

a potato will get the job done just turn the switch off to the fixture to kill the electricity. and put potato around the light bulb and turn it a couple times the broken bulb should come out.

Step one: TURN OFF THE POWER!!!!! How many of you idiots thought of that? Not many!

yea dumm dumm, first you should turn off power. then if you cant figure out how to remove the broken bulb you should just end yourself immediately

Petroleum Jelly??????????????????//

ROTFLMAO........... Anyone got a match?

stand in a bucket of water... stick your tongue into the socket while holding electrical extensions that re plugged in for grounding purposes.

i have a match, my azz and your face... .. oh wait.. that's a pair.

use your peckerwood... turn the electric switch on first

u mite get shok

What's the best idea is to take a carrot (not the babie one's) the big one's and cut the fat part off so that you have a flat end. Take the flat end and stick it into the broken part of the bulb you then start unscrewing.

you could take like kitchen tongs or something like that then tape the ends of the tongs to the bulb and hold the end and gently, unscrew.

hope it helps

This will happen everytime with the cheap (99c) Mexican bulbs. But I was able to unscrew it with a paper towel.

Okay, about the potato thing: Spuds are full of water, so pulling the cord or turning off the breaker is really important.

I faced this last month and, when the metal shell of the bulb base is in tight, all that happens is that the metal edge make a round depression in the spud. Try the pliers.

Second entry: 300 character limit is very restricting dealing with potentially fatal advice!

Rubber insulated plier handles are a must. Opening small pliers against the side the the metal shell sometimes works. Or grasp the lip of the shell and unscrew it. Coat next shell with a little Vasoline

MAKE SURE THE MACHINE IS UNPLUGGED!

1. Try a small pair of pliers and grap the filament.

2. If that doesn't work, take a slice of potato, jam it into the bulb, and try to twist it out.
cut a potato in half and use the meat half to twist like a wrench.
SIMPLE. TURN OFF LIGHT SWITCH

CUT A POTATO IN HALF

PLACE CUT END OF POTATO ON PART OF BULB(BASE) THAT IS LEFT

PUSH AND TURN

WORKS EVERYTIME
Unplug the appliance. Take a small potato and jam it in the socket, twist and the bulb's base should come out.
it sounds silly but cut an apple in half and use the apple( place over and turn) to get the broken part out. I saw it on DIY and i had to do it myself, it worked.Best of luck!
Turn off the machine. Unplug it. Cut a piece of potato small enough to fit in the space where the bulb is/was. push the potato into the part of the bulb that is left and unscrew it.
Okay, this is a serious answer. Use a potato. It works. I work in a restaurant and this is how we do it. Just stick the potato into the socket, apply just a little bit of pressure and start turning!
like he said needle nose pliers ----- and - oh yeah

MAKE SURE THE SWITCH IS OFF.
Absolutely have it unplugged first! You need to apply something 'spongy' to grab the loose filaments, something 'sticky' to hold on to the base of the bulb tight enough to be able to turn it, and something dry so you don't get electrocuted! Try something disposable, like silly putty, gum, even wadded up bread... I have even heard of potatoes being used, but those are large and wet. You could try new potatoes!
Cut a potato in half then jam it into the light. Make sure the power is off first.
first of all,,make sure the item is un-plugged,,no power!,,several good ways,,an eraser(the type that goes on the end of a pencil),,a peeled potato,,needle nose pliers
No matter how tiny the bulb... a potato cut in half or even a small piece of a potato will work. Just jam it on the bulb and turn. Best wishes
The potato thing works just make sure to unplug the machine.
tiny piece of raw potato
Best thing I've used was a candle...Rob
taffy candy, needle nose pliers or a potatoe slice
Flip the circuit breaker turning off the electric to that room. Test to make sure the power is off inside the socket. Use needle nose pliers with rubber handles and try and turn the remaining part. If that doesn't work use the needle nose to rip out the remaining part piece by piece.
Turn off the power and then insert a piece of a potato. The potato will conform to the parts of the bulb that are left so you might then be able to unscrew it easily.
TURN THE POWER OFF AND USE A PAIR OF NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS
I was going to say to put a potato in it, that works, but I guess it may be too big to fit in there.
Turn of the current to that room first! Use pliers next.
needle nose pliers......try to grab the aluminum part that screws in to it and turn it that way.. good luck!!
eraser end of a pencil
turn off the power. screw in another light bulb a little bit and unscrew it. maybe the broken thread comes out with it, too. If not, use pliers to grab the broken thread and twist out.
